The green woodpecker is the largest and most colourful of the three woodpeckers that breed in Britain. It is a common breeding resident in the UK with over 50,000 pairs, and can be seen in most counties throughout the UK, however is less common in Scotland and totally absent in Ireland. Green Woodpeckers can be found in mixed woodlands, parks and gardens. Their diet can be very adaptable and often consists of ants, larvae, seeds and fruits.
