As the name suggests, growing Chester Thornless gives you the pleasure of delicious blackberries without the pain caused by the sharp thorns normally associated with this fruit.

Enjoy fruit and vegetables straight from the garden. Nothing is healthier than freshly picked produce, eaten before the vitamins and natural sugars start to break down. The soft fruits that we sell are self-pollinating, so you only need one to get your first crop of delicious, home grown fruit.

Planting instructions:

The canes will do best in a sunny position in fertile soil, producing a generous crop of tasty fruit in August. If growing in a container it needs to be generously sized, at least twice the diameter of the root ball.

Immerse the pot in a bucket of water until the soil is saturated. Dig a round hole and throw loose soil around the root ball. It helps to gently tease out the root mass from the pot to encourage the plant to establish,

Blackberries need to be planted approximately 1.25 metres apart. If you’d like to create a beautiful fruiting hedge, simply plant the canes in a row beside three horizontal strands of well staked fencing wire at heights of 60 cm, 110 cm and 160 cm. Then tie the canes onto the wires to get the hedge started. Before long you will have an attractive, delicious and thornless hedge!

After harvest cut away excessive growth and remember that blackberries fruit on canes that are at least two years old. Trim back to a convenient bud and, as the canes establish, you can rejuvenate the plants by cutting out older shoots to make space for young ones that will fruit in future seasons. It’s also important to keep the soil well fed with nutritious organic matte.

Our plants may be delivered in an infant or dormant state but once exposed to sunlight, they will resume growing. We also recommend using a fertiliser or soil conditioner when repotting or relocating into the garden to help them establish quickly.
