The Jostaberry is still relatively unknown but is becoming increasingly popular. It is a cross between blackcurrant and two species of gooseberry, originally developed in Germany. The name is derived from the German words for blackcurrant (johannisbeere giving “Jo”) and gooseberry (stachelbeere giving "Sta").
Jostaberry produces dark purple to black berries with a pleasantly aromatic gooseberry flavour. The berries are about 1.5 cm wide and hang in bunches of 3-5. They can be eaten straight from the shrub or used to make juice or jam.
