The cornflower has been present in the British Isles since it was introduced during the Iron Age, with its radiant blue flowers being a common sight in cornfields ever since, however with the advent of modern herbicides it has seen a steep decline in recent years. Pollinated by both butterflies and bees this colourful annual makes a welcome addition to any garden.

• Can be sown outside from late March till the end of May.
• First loosen the soil in the seedbed.
• Spread the seeds evenly over the seedbed or in shallow furrows (depth 3mm / ⅛”), furrows should be about 30cm / 12” apart.
• Cover with soil.
• Water the ground regularly, especially during dry periods.
• Germination takes between 14-21 days.
• If young plants are too close to one another wait until the seedlings are large enough to handle, then thin them out so that then are about 15cm / 6” apart.
